Call
to Order
This meeting of the Omicron Kappa Chapter
was called to order at 5:12 pm, by
President Emily Brant.
Introduction
The opening prayer was given by Robert
Stewart.
Ice
Breaker Activity
President Emily Brant then asked the new members
to introduce themselves.
Devotional
Alumni Bethany Janzen gave the devotion.
She talked about goals. Should we
put college or career as our goal? She
pointed out that serving Christ should be
our goal. Our two biggest decisions are:
whether we are going to follow God, and
who we are going to marry. Other decisions
come after this and can be changed
(such as a career). She shared Proverbs
3:5-6 which calls us to “Trust in the
Lord.”
Business
Henry Frame updated everyone on financial
matters.
EJ Hewitt updated everyone on the progress
of making notebooks.
Jarod McKenzie also gave information about
the blog.
President Emily Brant then talked about
the SAT Essay practice that was
assigned at the last meeting.
Announcements
Rachel Fessenden then informed the
students about the upcoming March 9th
Birch Community Service Day.
Emily Brant went on to discuss the awards
banquet that usually takes place in
May.
This was followed by Bethany Janzen announcing
the rally at Pioneer
Courthouse Square. It was to commemorate
the lives lost due to abortion.
Leadership
Presentations
Parliamentarian Gabby Brant gave a
presentation on Parliamentary procedure.
She shared the importance of Parliamentary
procedure. It keeps formal meetings
orderly. She discussed, the main motion,
seconding, amendments, previous
questions, and adjournment.
Mr. Meisenhelder was the guest
speaker for the meeting. His topic was
professionalism. His first point was to
remove filler words similar to “like, uhhh,
ummm.” He then suggested that we wear
appropriate clothing to job interviews
and other formal occasions. He also
pointed out the importance of trainability.
Often we may not have the specific skills
for a job, but, if we are adaptable and
teachable, we can be a valuable asset. He
then urged us to protect our integrity.
Finally, he held a mock interview with
Henry Frame.
President Emily Brant then gave a
presentation on etiquette. She first urged the
students to respond to messages within 24
hours. Also, responding in the same
format (email, text, etc.) is key. Then,
she admonished the society to often say
“Please” and “Thank you. ” Emily Brant
also encouraged firm handshakes and
thank you notes. Eye contact is another
important tool. Social media proves a
volatile means of communication; be
careful with what you post. Professional
email addresses are also important.
Finally, be responsible and follow through
with assignments.
Adjournment
After a motion by the members, President
Emily Brant adjourned the meeting at
6:19 pm. Mr. McKinley prayed for the meal
that was to follow.
Officer
Meeting
All of the officers talked about their
current activities, and the attendees gave
their opinions of the regular meeting that
had just occurred. Also discussed
were the potential topics of scholarship
presentations and opportunities to be
presented in later meetings. There was
additionally a discussion on ideas for
community service and social events.
