January 21st Meeting Summary

There was a great turnout for the January 21st meeting held at Southwest Hills Baptist Church!
After an opening prayer, a devotional was given about the story of “The Woman at the Well,” illustrating how Jesus broke through many walls by talking to this woman.  She was a woman (in Jesus’ time, women did not speak to men), probably an outcast of the town, and a Samaritan (with whom Israelites did not associate).  Concluding the message, the student shared how Jesus died for each one of us; we all have an opportunity to receive his forgiveness for our sins.
An announcement was given about the upcoming Birch Community Services volunteer day.  It will take place on February 18th.  More information will be posted soon.
Students then looked over and proof-read each other’s résumés, the assignment from the previous meeting.
We then had the privilege to hear from several guest speakers, telling about their occupations and industries.
Dr. Brant shared about dentistry and his experience in the field.  He gave multiple reasons to join the profession including serving, leading, balanced lifestyle, empowering and educating patients, self-employment.  He shared information about a few programs which expose you to the dental field.  For information about them, feel free to leave a comment!
Mrs. Baugh spoke about being a nurse, discussing how it is a viable field, offering a diversity of options for those interested.  She described the field as being challenging, often changing, a solid investment in people, an opportunity for ministry, and greatly satisfying.
Mr. Lundburg told about his experience as a software engineer.  Math and physics are two important skills for joining the career.  He shared how his profession has engaged him and kept him interested with its many constant changes.  A very important thing he encouraged each student to do is to recognize your gifts and let God direct you.
Mrs. Lenneville spoke on her career in book sales.  She and her husband have an online business selling autographed mystery/adventure books.  She spoke on the importance of listening to the customer; if no one is buying, switch to selling what the customer wants.  She has made adjustments to her business numerous times.
Mr. Frame shared about his experience as a salesman.  A product cannot be successful unless it is sold.  There are two types of salespersons; those on the front lines selling products to new customers and those who help existing customers.
The meeting concluded with a prayer, dismissing students for dinner and visiting.

    Homework Assignment:
SAT essay practice.  Pick a partner and practice a 25 minute essay before the next meeting.  Vice President Laurel Stewart shared tips from her experience with the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT).  It is to your benefit to practice for the 25 minute timed essay.  By targeting your audience you can achieve a higher grade.  You will find it very helpful to choose a historical figure on which to write your essay.  Try using the character you picked in several ways, answering multiple different questions.

Note:  If you have already taken the SAT, no need to practice.  Instead, consider any awards and scholarships for which you have applied and write up a list to share with other students who may wish to partake in the future.  Please have the list ready to bring to our next meeting, March 17th.
