September 21 Meeting Follow-up

Call to order and opening prayer
Jarod McKenzie called to order the regular meeting of the Omicron Kappa Chapter of the National Honor Society. Mr. Schmidt said the opening prayer.

Thought From The Word
Matthew Riegg brought us our devotion from Glen Evans on the topic of receiving honor.
Never seek honors. Do not seek great things for yourself. If they come to en masse, lay them at the feet of the one who gave them to you.
Application:  There are three responses to receiving honors.

  1. Pride in self.
  2. Pride in self degradation.
  3. Humility.
Don’t have a response in pride but in humility.

Ice Breaker
Our Vice President brought us this ice breaker.
Asking people: Name, Grade and the most fun thing you done out of your home town.

Parliamentary Procedure Presentation
Annalise McKenzie explained about what Parliamentary Procedure works and what it is.
Parliamentary procedure is in place to protect the rights of the people, a fair debate, and to get things done in an orderly manner. In general the Chairman or President can speak at will while the other members need to follow these rules.
All the special rules and such will be on a piece of paper that the students can store in their notebooks.

Community Service Announcement
Caleb Sutherland has put together a service opportunity to serve at Birch Community Services on Oct 19th from 9am to 1pm.

Update on the Notebooks
Lila Pattison updated us on the new Notebooks. New Members must purchase a notebook for $5. Money will be given to the Treasure.

Dues Update
Chris Feener and Mr. Randy Schmidt brought us an update on dues. Approximate total cost for the year is $820 for the year. Dues for each member should be around $35 per year. We must change the by-laws for this to come into effect and the changes should be done by the next meeting in two months.

By-Laws Amendment
An amendment has been created to allow for the position of Diplomat.
The Amendment reads, “M. Diplomat 1. The Diplomat shall assist in the creation of committees for event or other work. 2. The Diplomat will serve as an advisor to the committee and be responsible for reminding them to come up with progress reports to give at meetings when necessary. 3. Each committee must be comprised of at least three people for voting purposes and must have a committee chair elected by the chapter.” Wesley Willsea moved to accept the amendment into the bylaws as is. Jarod McKenzie moved we strike the final words, “elected by the chapter.” Motion Second Passed (MSP).
The Amendment now reads, “M. Diplomat 1. The Diplomat shall assist in the creation of committees for event or other work. 2. The Diplomat will serve as an advisor to the committee and be responsible for reminding them to come up with progress reports to give at meetings when necessary. 3. Each committee must be comprised of at least three people for voting purposes.” A motion to have the committee chair elected by the officers was brought up by Caleb Sutherland. MSP
A motion by our Advisor to strike the previous amendment was made and to now the committee will elect the chair. MSP

Mrs. Stewart said that that her family has PSAT study books people can buy.

Guest Speaker-What is the Honor Society
Mrs. Rachel Janzen was our guest speaker and her topic was “What the Honor Society Is”.
In 2000, Mrs. Janzen started thinking about college prep and all the services provided by public schools.
In 2008, she heard about the Home School Honor Society. That year she and another home school mother started this chapter of the Honor Society.
In 2009, Mrs. Stewart stepped up to the position of advisory. The Honor Society had seven students all of which held officer positions.
That brings us up to today where we are flourishing.
The reason behind the 90% test score is so that across the board everyone is able to be scored on the same level. There is no cut off for how many times you can take a test to get 90%. Take this test at the end of 8th grade, because this is when it is the easiest.
One of the reasons for starting this Honor Society was to give high school students the opportunity to be in leadership positions. Also making friends was another thought behind founding this essential home school program.
The Honor Society is a student run organization.
